Daangeer

Of all the vertebrates roaming on Earth, birds are notably the most studied ones. Yet there are places, where grey areas and knowledge gaps still exist. One such region is Pakistan, which is home to over 700 bird species documented pre- and post-partition era, a figure that is gradually growing each year. A pioneer leap has been taken in the right direction in the form of “Daangeer”, to overcome the gaping pit of ornithological data from Pakistan. Daangeer is the country’s first quarterly newsletter specifically launched to cover everything about the avian fauna of Pakistan. The newsletter itself is named after the regional Pahari term for the Vulnerable Western Tragopan, a mountain-dwelling pheasant endemic to the Western Himalayas. It was first filmed in Pakistan to draw attention to its conservation priorities. Daangeer is the brainchild of Rewilding Indus (RI) – a wildlife research & conservation organization aiming to restore ecosystems and habitats in a long-run. This inclusive newsletter has a diverse array of content that pleases the taste of readers and contributors alike. It welcomes data-based articles on behaviours, diversity, conservation success, birding reports and even comics highlighting imminent issues faced by species. This innovative publication aims to raise awareness about avian species, their habitats, and conservation efforts, fostering a deeper appreciation for Pakistan’s rich and diverse birdlife like never before. With two issues already published and freely-available to wider audience, Daangeer continues to grow and expand. This publication offers valuable insights into Pakistan’s birds in contemporary times and is becoming a reliable resource for learning. Given that, the founders have plans to include more interactive elements in proceeding issues, in hopes to expand its reach and impact.
